The place
Switzerland is a country you should not drive. The Glacier Express, the Bernina line, the funicular up to a breakfast terrace — the engineering is the scenery. We book the panoramic carriage early, then a table in the dining car that no one else seems to know about.
In Zermatt the village is car-free and the Matterhorn arrives at the end of every street. Our house there has thirty rooms, a stone spa and a sommelier who will open a Valais white you cannot buy at home. In Lucerne we prefer the old town, a balcony over the lake and a boat at seven in the morning, when the water is still a mirror.
